REPORT: Wednesday 1-0 Oxford United

Wednesday booked their place in the third round of the Capital One Cup with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Oxford United.

Carlos Carvalhal again made several changes with Jack Hunt, Jeremy Helan, Alex Lopez, Ross Wallace and Caolan Lavery all coming into the side.

The Owls began on the front foot, forcing chances from successive corners in the first 10 minutes and Wallace fired just wide with a fierce shot after 18 minutes.

On the half hour Oxford ‘keeper Sam Slocombe was forced into a smart save after a slick passing move between Lopez and Kieran Lee, with the latter getting the shot away.

U’s defender Sam Long was forced off the field just before half time with a twisted knee after a challenge with Lavery and was replaced by Liam Sercombe.

The Owls went ahead 10 minutes into the second half when Atdhe Nuhiu headed home from a couple of yards out following a bit of a scramble in the box after Jack Hunt’s initial effort.

10 minutes later, Carvalhal shuffled his pack with Modou Sougou and Marco Matias replacing Lavery and Wallace.

The subs combined five minutes later as a Sougou cross was headed goalwards by Matias, forcing a fantastic save from Sercombe.

Oxford dominated the closing stages as they chased an equaliser but Wednesday held on.
