REPORT: Wednesday 4-1 Mansfield Town

Wednesday continued their perfect start to the season, beating Mansfield Town 4-1 to progress to the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Carlos Carvalhal made no fewer than nine changes to the side that started against Bristol City, with only Álex López and Tom Lees, captain for the night, keeping their places.

The Owls were ahead inside 13 minutes through Lucas João , who made a promising cameo in Saturday’s win over Bristol City. He rose unmarked to head home a López free kick and score his first goal for the club.

Wednesday doubled their lead five minutes later through the unlikeliest of scorers. Modou Sougou crossed in from the right and Jose Semedo headed home at the far post.

The Owls continued to dominate first half proceedings but Mansfield were back in the game just before half time as Ryan Tafazoili took advantage of some indecision by Joe Wildsmith and made it 2-1.

HALF TIME: Wednesday 2-1 Mansfield Town

Mansfield made a bright start to the second half, forcing Carlos Carvalhal to make his first substitution of the night with Marco Matias replacing a frustrated Caolan Lavery.

Within minutes Kieran Lee was put through on goal by João after a smart turn by the striker and he made no mistake as he made it 3-1 to the Owls.

Wednesday moved up a gear after the goal, with Matias going close twice in a couple of minutes before Sam Hutchinson made a surprising appearance, replacing López.

As the game began to peter out, the Owls made their final change with Jeremy Helan coming on for the all-action João.

Wednesday completed a routine win in the 84th minute as Sougou fired home after Helan’s low cross.
