REPORT: Slick City thump Wednesday

Wednesday were dumped out of the Capital One Cup as holders Manchester City put seven past them at the Etihad Stadium.

Stuart Gray made four changes to the side that started the 1-0 win over Reading on Saturday.

Chris Kirkland replaced Keiren Westwood in goal, Lewis Buxton made his first appearance of the season, while Kamil Zayatte and Gary Madine also made the starting XI.

The Owls more than held their own in a first half of few chances. Eliaquim Mangala came closest for City when he cracked the post with a firm shot, while Frank Lampard also forced Kirkland into a low save.

Gary Madine and Stevie May both had half-chances for Wednesday with the Scotsman firing wide from range.

HALF TIME: Manchester City 0-0 Wednesday.

The Champions of England were ahead just two minutes into the second half as Frank Lampard poked home at the near post from James Milner’s low cross from the right.

The former Chelsea man could have made it 2-0 three minutes later but Kirkland saved well after a rapid City counter.

City did double their lead in the 53rd minute as Edin Dzeko slotted home from Jesus Navas’ cross. Just a minute later it was 3-0 as Navas finished a dazzling run with a rifled finish into the top corner.

There was worse to come on the hour as Yaya Toure made it 4-0 from the spot after Kamil Zayatte was sent off for barely touching Lampard.

Stuart Gray immediately shored up the defence, with Claude Dielna replacing Giles Coke, while Atdhe Nuhiu replaced Madine. City then took off goalscorer, with youngster Jose Angel Pozo replacing the Ivorian.

James Milner hit the post for a rampant City, as Jeremy Helan came on for Liam Palmer and Dedryck Boyate came on for City’s Fernandinho in the 70th minute. The hosts’ final change saw the lesser-spotted Scott Sinclair replace Milner.

It was 5-0 with 15 minutes left as Dzeko headed home Aleksander Kolarov’s nicely weighted cross. Pozo then made it 6-0 with three minutes left. In injury time, Lampard finished another flowing City move to complete the misery.

FULL TIME: Manchester City 7-0 Wednesday.
