REPORT: Wednesday 0-0 Derby County

Sheffield Wednesday had to settle for a point after an entertaining 0-0 draw against a Derby side heavily tipped for promotion this season.

New signing Stevie May made his debut for the Owls as last week’s hero Giles Coke was forced to settle for a place on the bench.

It was a frantic start in front of 25,186 at Hillsborough, with May forcing Lee Grant into a smart save with his first chance as a Wednesday player.

Both sides had chances to take the lead after 20 minutes with Atdhe Nuhiu’s scuffed shot easily held by ex-Owl Grant before Chris Martin hit the side netting after a speculative ball over the top.

Minutes later Chris Maguire hit the crossbar from a free kick after Nuhiu was brought down by Jeff Hendrick.

There was an injury blow for the Owls before the break as Kieran Lee limped off with a suspected groin injury, to be replaced by Giles Coke.

HALF TIME: Wednesday 0-0 Derby County

Wednesday dominated the opening exchanges of the second half with Chris Maguire forcing Lee Grant into a smart, low save.

Derby made two substitutions on the hour with Will Hughes and Jamie Ward replaced by Omar Mascarell and Leon Best. Five minutes later the Rams made their final change with Johnny Russell replacing Simon Dawkins.

Newcomer Russell had a great chance to put Derby ahead minutes later but he fired just wide of the post with only Keiren Westwood to beat.

With 20 minutes left Wednesday made their second change as Gary Madine came on for the ever-lively Atdhe Nuhiu.

Despite Wednesday continuing to push for the winner, Russell had another great chance to put Derby ahead only to be denied by a fantastic Westwood save.
