REPORT: Brighton 0-1 Wednesday

Wednesday got their 2014-15 season off to a flyer with a 1-0 win at Brighton, courtesy of a stunning first half goal by Giles Coke.

Stuart Gray handed debuts to ‘keeper Keiren Westwood and former Leeds defender Tom Lees. Meanwhile, former Owl Chris O’Grady started up front for the hosts at a packed Amex Stadium, with 2,667 Wednesdayites making up a crowd of 26,993.

Kazenga LuaLua had the best chance of an evenly matched opening half hour, forcing Keiren Westwood into a decent save.

With just four minutes to go before half time the Owls went ahead courtesy of an absolute stunner by Giles Coke, firing home from 25 yards.

There was another chance for LuaLua just before the break but he put it wide.

Just five minutes into the second half Brighton were down to ten men after Andrew Crofts’ high, dangerous tackle on Sam Hutchinson.

Brighton made a double change on the hour with Kemy Agustien and Will Buckley coming on to replace debutant Shamir Fenelon and Jake Forster-Caskey.

With 15 minutes left Brighton threw caution to the wind with Craig Mackail-Smith replacing Inigo Calderon as they chased an equaliser.

Moments later the Owls looked to shore things up with Jose Semedo replacing Jacques Maghoma, after the winger had fired wide for the Owls. Madine then made his first appearance for the Owls in 12 months, replacing Atdhe Nuhiu.

There were five minutes’ injury time but the Owls controlled possession and secured all three points on the opening day of the season.
