REPORT: York City 0-2 Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday kicked off their 2014/15 pre-season campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win over York City at Bootham Crescent.

Chris Maguire had a hand in both goals – he scored a screamer from 25 yards after his earlier free-kick had been headed in by York defender Femi Ilesanmi, giving the Owls a perfect start to their warm-up for the new campaign.

The starting XI was of interest to the 2,000 travelling Wednesday fans, with obvious holes in the squad still to be filled – particularly at centre half.

Chris Kirkland started in goal, with new boy Keiran Westwood not named in the squad.

The back four saw an unusual combination of Liam Palmer, Sam Hutchinson, Joe Mattock and Jeremy Helan – you expect Wednesday will sign at least two new centre halves in the coming weeks, with an announcement on Glenn Loovens expected at Owls in the Park.

Fresh from signing his new contract, Jose Semedo lined up alongside Giles Coke in midfield with Jacques Maghoma and French triallist Achille Campion also named in the side.

Chris Maguire and Gary Madine, making his first appearance for the Owls in 11 months, completed the line-up while Development Squad signings Matt Young and Ed Sanders were named on the bench.

The Owls took the lead inside half an hour with Chris Maguire’s free kick diverted into his own net by York defender Femi Ilesanmi own goal.

Chris Maguire made sure his name would be on the scoresheet, though, when he fired in a piledriver from 25 yards to double the Owls’ lead before the break.

Stuart Gray rung the changes at half time with Atdhe Nuhiu, Caolan Lavery, Kieran Lee, Rhys McCabe and Michail Antonio replacing Madine, Campion, Palmer, Hutchinson and Maguire.

Lavery missed a couple of chances to make it 3-0 to the Owls before further changes on the hour saw Kirkland, Helan and Maghoma replaced by Joe Wildsmith, Rafa Floro and Jack Stobbs.

The Owls continued to look sharp and ten minutes later Paul Corry replaced Coke.

There was a chance for Atdhe Nuhiu to get on the scoresheet but he was denied by a last-ditch tackle by Keith Lowe.

The last two substitutions saw Ed Sanders and Matt Young make their Wednesday debuts, replacing Jose Semedo and Joe Mattock, while a late Atdhe Nuhiu header was saved well by Michael Ingham.

Next up for Wednesday is a trip to Bury on Friday night (7.45pm kick-off), before the squad fly out to Slovenia next Saturday to continue their pre-season preparations.
