Carvalhal focused on Wednesday improvement

Carvalhal focused on Wednesday improvement

September is always an important month for any football team.

The transfer window has been and gone, with teams now hoping to gain some momentum.

However, Wednesday returned from the international break with a 3-1 defeat to Burnley, making that two defeats in two games.

Despite this, Owls gaffer Carlos Carvalhal was eager to address any concerns.

“I feel very upset with the result, but, unlike against Middlesbrough, not with the performance,” he said.

Asked if his charges felt the same, he said:  “The players know and appreciate the quality and depth we have in the squad.

“They know we must learn from our mistakes when we play against Bolton, but the defeat hasn’t hindered our spirit.

“They know that with more performances like that we will pick up more wins, which is now what we need to do.”

Carvalhal was clear that he was less focused on preparing for other teams, and more concerned with Wednesday being the best they can be.

“We know the next match at Bolton will be tough, but we know every match at this level is tough,” he said.

“We need to focus more on making sure we are the best we can be, and if you asked me if I would change our style of play I would say no. We just need to be more structured and organised”.

McGugan: Not selected in the squad at Burnley

Since his arrival, Carvalhal has brought in 15 players, meaning team selection has become quite a hot topic among Owls fans. One discussed quite heavily on Saturday came when experienced fan favourite Lewis McGugan and new recruit Jack Hunt were both left out of the 18 that travelled to Burnley.

“In certain games, you need a bit more strength, or you need players on the bench who can play in more than one position,” said Carvalhal.

“Even the players who do not make the 18 need to know they are part of the club and need to be ready to be called upon.”

One player who did make the starting 11 and his debut at Burnley was Fernando Forestieri, a player who received high praise from the gaffer.

“I cannot tell you how hard I tried to get Forestieri to come to the club,” said Carvalhal. “He is a very talented player who I believe, once he regains 100% fitness, will be a great player for the club.”

In the modern game, with big money transfers and clubs backed by billionaire owners, it can be easy to forget about home-grown players, such as Wednesday academy product Joe Wildsmith.

A lifelong Wednesday fan, it is obvious how much playing for his club means to him.

“Walking out on Saturday at Burnley was a bit surreal for me, and I had to give myself a moment to take it all in before concentrating on the game,” he said.

Carvalhal said Keiren Westwood is still not 100% but, despite saying Wildsmith will play on Tuesday night, the young stopper said he had not spoken about it with the manager.

Despite this, it is clear Carvalhal has complete faith in him, and Wildsmith said he felt the entire defence trusts him when he plays.

“I enjoy playing in front of Tom (Lees) and the skipper (Glenn Loovens),” he said. “Both  have been really good with me and have made sure to let me know they have complete faith in me, which gives me confidence.”

This weekend there was sad news that Owls legend Ron Springett had passed away, and Wildsmith mentioned  he was well aware of the impact the World Cup winning ‘keeper had at Wednesday, saying he hoped he could have a similar effect.

“Obviously I know he was a one club man, who was also capped several times for England. Personally for me, if an offer came along for me to get regular first team football I would have to think it through; I think in the modern age players can’t afford not to.

“If I ended up being a one club player, though, I would love for it to be at Sheffield Wednesday.”
