PREVIEW: Wednesday -v- Leeds United

PREVIEW: Wednesday -v- Leeds United

After a disappointing result at Burton Albion, Wednesday will look to get back on track with a victory over Yorkshire rivals Leeds United.

Carvalhal’s team suffered a 3-1 reverse in Staffordshire on Tuesday, while Garry Monk’s side are limping in to yet another crisis.

Wednesday had enjoyed a good start before the Burton loss.

United, however, remain winless in three.

LEEDS Fulham (H) D 1-1 14 3 9 1 9 39%

Wednesday picked up their first defeat at the Pirelli Stadium on a historic night for the Staffordshire club.

Having fallen behind early, a Gary Hooper penalty looked to set Wednesday back on track in search of the win.

Injuries to an already patch-work back four were not ideal but Carvalhal was not pleased by Wednesday’s slack defensive display.

The Head Coach said: “We tried to play our usual game but we couldn’t play as we can do.

“We expected to win three points and we didn’t get what we wanted but the good thing is we have another game on Saturday when we will do our best to try and win.”

United are once again in turmoil. Garry Monk is the latest ‘good football man’ to come in as Head Coach, only to be undermined by autocratic chairman Massimo Cellino.

The latest allegation against the Italian is that he is hiring staff to purposely undermine Monk; the former Swansea boss is said to be considering his future in West Yorkshire.

Leeds secured their first point of the season on Tuesday with a last minute equaliser at home to Fulham.

THE FORM BOOK

WEDNESDAY L 1-3 D 0-0 L 1-2 W 1-0 W 3-0
Fulham (H) Birmingham (H) Fleetwood (A) QPR (A) Atalanta (H)
LEEDS D 1-1 L 1-2 D 2-2 AET L 0-3 W 2-1

Wednesday are looking to add a fourth defender to boost their centraldefensive ranks.

The defeat at Burton exposed Wednesday’s lack of depth at the back, as Carvalhal finished the game with two midfielders and two full-backs in defensive positions.

He revealed in his press-conference yesterday: “We think that we’ll solve it very soon.

“Very, very soon we’ll be with four in the position like last year. Absolutely sure, in the next few days or maybe few hours. Really.”

Leeds enjoyed a good pre-season but were embarrassed by QPR on the opening day. It took extra time and penalties for the Whites to get past Fleetwood.

United travelled well last season, picking up seven wins and nine draws, although one of their seven defeats came at Hillsborough in January.

LAST MEETING: January 16 2016 – SkyBet Championship – Hillsborough, Att: 23, 909

Wednesday moved into the top six with a win over Leeds in January.

A quickfire double from Gary Hooper early in the second half secured the points after The Owls had ridden their luck in the first period.

The fixture has been an even one since Wednesday’s promotion in 2012, with both sides claiming two victories in eight games.

A repeat of the 6-0 in January 2014 wouldn’t go amiss (apologies, had to mention it!)

CARVALHAL’S COHORTS

Tom Lees has been passed fit after sitting out in midweek.

Glenn Loovens has returned to training but will not be available for selection for a couple of weeks.

Stand-in defender Jose Semedo left the field injured on Tuesday and looks set to miss out.

Gary Hooper’s penalty at the Pirelli was the first goal for Wednesday’s first choice forward line this season.

Will Fernando Forestieri return to the side in his stead?

Lees: amongst the best defenders in the country?

Lees: amongst the best defenders in the country?

Carlos Carvalhal described Tom Lees as ‘one of the best defenders’ in the country yesterday.

He has certainly transformed his career since leaving tomorrow’s opponents and has been amongst Wednesday’s most consistent performers in the past two years.

His new partnership with Sam Hutchinson has looked solid in the two league games they’ve played together; another ninety-minute shut-out will set Wednesday on the way to another three points.

Leeds have spent all summer chasing Liam Bridcutt from Sunderland after selling Lewis Cook to Premier League Bournemouth.

Alex Mowatt remains alongside a new raft of Thorpe Arch youngsters; the experience of Toumani Diagouraga will be key in their midfield.

Wednesday should keep their eye on Stuart Dallas – another former Brentford man – on the left wing.

Kemar Roofe should expect another tough examination from experienced second tier defenders this weekend.

HUGH’S VERDICT

This fixture has been a difficult one to predict in recent seasons, despite Wednesday’s progress and United’s relative stagnation.

Leeds have almost become accustomed to battling against off-field adversity, so banking on a home win would be a foolish move.

Carvalhal has a good record of getting Wednesday to bounce back from defeats – it’s those defeats against inferior teams that are the problem in the first place.

VERDICT: For the first time this season, I’ll have a little faith in the team’s abilities. Forestieri will win the crowd back and Tom Lees will notch against his former club for the first time.

2-0 Wednesday
