MATCH PREVIEW:Wednesday -v- Rotherham United

It’s Wednesday versus Colin: Round 327 – can the Owls get one over him and our tertiary local rivals or will Rotherham pull off a Hillsborough upset?

The Owls had a creditable draw last time out but need to pull a win out to keep distance between us and the chasing pack.

ROTHERHAM Brentford (H) W 2-1 16 8 6 1 12 40%

Wednesday getting a good point on the road at Hull was overshadowed by Forestieri’s sending off for a second yellow for a diving despite replays suggesting that he was the sinned against not the sinner. Forestieri also had the Owls’ best chance as he clattered the woodwork with a long range effort.

Rotherham got their first win under Neil Warnock as they got a home win against out of form Brentford, Danny Ward’s winner came from a set-piece as Rotherham gained ground in their struggle against relegation.

Wednesday have won just twice in the last eight but have lost just twice in the same time, converting a few more draws to wins would help our cause, we’re tough to beat but at the moment we lack a killer instinct.

Rotherham recorded their first wins and goals under Neil Warnock, the Millers have been poor on the road this season winning just twice away from home with their wins at Leeds and Birmingham also being their only clean sheets away from home this term.

Rotherham United 1-2 Wednesday

(T.Thorpe 90)(L.Joao 46,F.Forestieri 50)

Wednesday won the last meeting courtesy of a hot start to the second half courtesy of Joao and Forestieri. They also recorded a remarkable win last season as they won 3-2 after trailing 2-1 deep in injury time.

Wednesday are well overdue a win at Hillsborough against the Millers though, their last triumph over Rotherham at S6 was a 2-0 win in September 1981.

CARVALHAL’S COHORTS

Fernando Forestieri serves the first of a two match ban after his dismissal at Hull, Claude Dielna has also departed joining Slovan Bratislava until the end of the season.

Joe Wildsmith has also returned to training and the Owls have the luxury of a fit squad to choose from.

KEY PLAYERS

Ross Wallace is one of the players who can step up in Forestieri’s absence if allowed the opportunity to do so, his quality of delivery and threat of a thunderbolt strike is enough to keep opposition defences honest, if he can supply the forward line, the Owls could have plenty of chances to find the net.

Joe Mattock never truly made the left back spot his own in his time at SWFC, he’s had more opportunity at Rotherham but Wallace should fancy his chances of getting at him on more than one occasion.

HERE COMES D-JUDGE

We go from one of the elite of the division to one of the worst sides in the division.

Of course this game has the Colin factor and he’ll be delighted if he can get one over on Wednesday but even without Forestieri we should have enough to pull off the win but it needs commitment, focus and a lack of complacency.

If we play anything close to our full potential we should win but we can’t take Rotherham lightly, Warnock will have them fired up and they’ll be tough to break down and will look to exploit any opportunities we give them.

I still fancy us though.

VERDICT: 2-1 Wednesday
