NEWS | Wednesday confirm five-year Lees deal

Wednesday have announced that popular defender Tom Lees has extended his contract with the club until 2021.

The former Leeds defender, 25, has become a real favourite with fans during his two seasons with the club as a result of consistently terrific performances.

His solid partnership with club captain Glenn Loovens has been a key cog in a defence that has equalled a club-record sixteen clean sheets in consecutive seasons.

A former England Under 21, Lees made his name in West Yorkshire but has flourished since moving to Hillsborough in 2014.

He has gone on to make 88 appearances so far for the Owls, and has taken the captain’s armband on a number of occasions in Loovens’ absence.

Impressive in his first season, Lees took his game a step further last season and became the vocal heart of a battling Wednesday defence.

Carlos Carvalhal will be delighted to see the Birmingham-born player commit to the long term with Wednesday after recent speculation has linked him to a number of Premier League clubs.

He joins Kieren Westwood and Kieran Lee in signing new long-term deals this summer.

Lees told the club’s official website of his delight at signing a new deal.

““I spoke to the chairman and he has big ambitions for Sheffield Wednesday and I’m delighted to be part of it.

“I’m really happy here and like any player, I want to play in the Premier League.

“I am convinced we can achieve these ambitions together.”

With three key players signing afresh this summer, let’s hope something is in the pipeline regarding a certain top-scorer from last season.
