Buckley signs; Westwood extends contract

Wednesday have today announced the loan signing of Will Buckley from Premier League Sunderland, while Kieren Westwood has extended his stay with the Owls.

The Oldham-born winger has joined the Owls for the season after being deemed surplus to requirements by new Black Cats boss David Moyes.

Buckley, 26, made his name at Rochdale before stints at Watford and Brighton, breaking the Seagulls’ record transfer fee as he made the switch from Hertfordshire.

His £2.5m move north has never really paid off, and loans back to the Championship have followed.

He will act as cover for various established members of the Owls’ team, and will likely make a full debut at Cambridge in the League Cup.

He takes the number 38 jersey (whatever that means, these days!)

Kieren Westwood has signed a new contract that will see him stay at Hillsborough until 2019.

The Irishman has become a real favourite of the Hillsborough crowd and is unquestionably among the highest performing goalkeepers in the Football League.

Having initially joined on a Bosman transfer from Sunderland in 2014, Westwood has gone on to form a formidable relationship with Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens.

The three are responsible for marshalling a defence that has equalled club-record clean sheet numbers in consecutive seasons.

Westwood became the first Wednesday player to enter a PFA Team of the Year since

The new deal will see him remain at the club until he is 35.

Wednesday will hope he can continue to mentor Joe Wildsmith and Cameron Dawson; both young goalkeepers can learn a great deal from a player as experienced as Kieren.
