Wednesday make Hooper deal permanent

Wednesday make Hooper deal permanent

Sheffield Wednesday have today made Gary Hooper’s loan switch from Norwich City a permanent transfer.

The deal, thought to cost Wednesday £3m, will see the popular forward stay in Yorkshire until the summer of 2019.

Hooper has been in excellent form of late, having scored six times in twelve appearances.

He hit the headlines last week, scoring a brace in consecutive games as Wednesday moved into the Championship top six with victories over Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.

Carlos Carvalhal has spoken frequently about his desire to sign Hooper, labelling the former Celtic hit-man as his number one target since taking the reigns in June.

Hooper, 27, has a distinguished career at this level. He scored twenty-four and nineteen goals in consecutive seasons for Scunthorpe as they hoped to stabilise themselves in the second tier; before moving north of the border to enjoy a memorable stay at Glasgow Celtic.

His trophy-laden three-year stay included goals in the Champions League and Europa League, as well as mutliple Championship and Cup titles.

Hooper has proven to be a good foil for Wednesday’s other forwards; his poaching instincts and link-up play have come to the fore in recent weeks.

As first choice, he will look to form a continued relationship with Fernando Forestieri and Atdhe Nuhiu.

With Lucas João waiting in the wings, and Marco Matias set to return from injury, Wednesday suddenly have a breadth of attacking options to choose from.

Carvalhal will hope that Hooper can pick up where he left off as Wednesday look to continue their push for the Championship play-offs. He is available for Wednesday’s trip to Reading.
