Bennett checks in with Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have today bolstered their defensive ranks with the loan signing of Joe Bennett.

Bennett is an attack-minded left-back and joins from Premier League strugglers Aston Villa until the end of the season.

His arrival, thought to be as cover for the impressively consistent Daniel Pudil, is likely to spell the end of                                                                    Rhoys Wiggins’ spell at Hillsborough.

The Welshman has been linked with short-term moves to Bristol City and Brighton in recent days.

Bennett, 25, made his name in a five year professional spell at Middlesbrough, making his debut as a teenager in the Premier League before becoming first choice under Tony Mowbray in 2010.

He moved to Aston Villa in 2012 for a £2.75m fee, but struggled to cement a first team place under a succession of managers. He spent the entirety of last season on loan at Brighton, making forty-one starts.

Despite his halting progress at Villa Park, Bennett carries a wealth of experience in the Championship and should be a reliable option if needed.
