Wednesday draw Oxford United in Capital One Cup

Wednesday draw Oxford United in Capital One Cup

Sheffield Wednesday have tonight been drawn against Oxford United in the 2nd Round of the Capital One Cup. The tie will be played at Hillsborough in the week commencing 24th August.

The Owls secured comfortable passage to Round 2 after defeating fourth tier Mansfield at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

Goals from Lucas João, José Semedo, Kieran Lee and Modou Sogou saw a much-changed Wednesday outfit see off the Stags in a fairly straight-forward S6 encounter.

Having been seeded for the draw, Wednesday were guaranteed to face ‘lesser opposition’ and will face Oxford after The U’s somewhat convincingly beat Brentford 4-0 at Griffin Park in the shock of the First Round.

Wednesday last faced Oxford in the League Cup in 1996; The Yellows held on at Hillsborough against a second string Wednesday side before a late winner from former Owl Nigel Jemson gave the outsiders a surprise win over David Pleat’s Owls.

The Us will again travel to Hillsborough as huge outsiders but will be buoyed by their sublime performance against Brentford. With both sides expected to carry some threat at the top of their respective divisions, both Michael Appleton and Carlos Carvalhal will likely rotate their squads.

A renowned cup-specialist, Carvalhal has stressed the importance of knock-out competitions and will be keen to ensure the Owls at least match their Capital One Cup performance of last season, when Stuart Gray’s charges reached the third round before heavy defeat to Manchester City.
