Sougou signs; Wiggins wings in

Sheffield Wednesday today confirmed the double signing of 30-year-old winger Modou ‘Pape’ Sougou on a free transfer and 27-year-old defender Rhoys Wiggins from Charlton Athletic.

Senegalese star Sougou, who can play on the wing and up front, has been at Olympique de Marseille since January 2013, having joined the French Ligue 1 side from Romanian club CFR Cluj for 4.5 million (£3.2 million).

The French club confirmed yesterday morning that Sougou’s contract had been terminated, paving the way for his move to Hillsborough.

Sougou made 14 appearances for Marseille in the 2012/13 season but has spent the last two seasons on loan at fellow Ligue 1 side Evian, scoring six goals in 54 games. Evian were, though, relegated to Ligue 2 last season.

Sougou began his career at Senegalese side AS Douanes, before moving to Europe at the age of 19 to join Portuguese side União de Leiria.

He spent the 2005/06 season at Vitória before returning to Leiria for two seasons. In 2008 he joined his third Portuguese side, Académica de Coimbra, where he scored 19 goals in three seasons.

In 2011 Sougou made the move to Romania, joining CFR Cluj and the winger helped them to a third Romanian title in 2011/12. One of his teammates at Cluj was Sergiu Buș, who began his career there before joining CSKA Sofia in 2014.

Sougou featured in the Champions League for the Romanian champions in the first half of the 2012/13 season, scoring in a 3-1 defeat to Galatasaray and playing in a famous 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Buș risked the wrath of the Wednesday PR department yesterday lunchtime when he posted an image of himself and Sougou on his Instagram page, with a post saying “Welcome my brother”.

Crystal Palace academy graduate Wiggins, meanwhile, joins the Owls for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year deal at the club.

The left back made only one appearance for the Eagles before joining Norwich City in 2009. He spent two loan spells at AFC Bournemouth in 2009 and 2010 before joining the south coast club permanently in 2010.

Uxbridge-born Wiggins, who has represented Wales at youth level, has, though, spent the majority of his career at The Valley, making 128 appearances for the Addicks in four seasons.
