Lucas João joins; Lees extends stay

Wednesday this afternoon confirmed the signing of Portuguese under-21 striker Lucas João from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Nacional.

The 21-year old, who has signed a four-deal to join the Owls, is of Angolan heritage and joined Nacional in 2011 as a 17-year-old. He has since gone on to make over fifty appearances in the Portuguese Primera.

He enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Mirandela in the 2012/13 season, scoring a goal every 2.5 games in a thirty match spell. The commanding forward was called up to the full Portugal national side this March, but did not make an appearance for the Selecção.

The João signing comes just hours after Wednesday announced Tom Lees had extended his contract at Hillsborough to keep him at the club until 2019.

The centre half, who joined the Owls on a free from Leeds United last summer, was a rock last season, making 48 appearances as Wednesday established themselves as one of the most frugal sides in the Championship.

Owls fan will get their first glimpse at the new Hillsborough playing surface and big screen as Wednesday entertain St Mirren in their final pre-season friendly tomorrow afternoon.
