REPORT: Bolton 0-0 Wednesday

Two points dropped? Wednesday completely dominated this Roses encounter yet travel back across the Pennines with a solitary point.

Kamil Zayatte came into the side after playing 90 midweek minutes for Guinea, while new signings Royston Drenthe and Claude Dielna began their Wednesday careers on the bench. Everton loanee Hallam Hope dropped out of the squad altogether.

Wednesday began the game very brightly indeed; with our now typically attractive football creating a few good half-chances. Wingers Maguire and Maghoma looked lively, as good crosses from both wings could not be turned in by Nuhiu or May.

The best chances of the half were to fall the way of the Owls, first Stevie May was to fire home a crisp volley, only for a foul to be given against Nuhiu in the build-up. Chris Maguire followed soon after, his low drive was cleared by Matt Mills on the Bolton line.

HT – Bolton 0-0 Wednesday

Wednesday began the second half well, now attacking the sizeable contingent that had crossed the Pennines. Good work from Maguire and Palmer down the right forced an early corner that was headed over by the onrushing Joe Mattock – another chance for Wednesday to take the lead squandered.

On the hour, Stuart Gray gave a first chance to Royston Drenthe, but it was from the other flank that another chance was fall Wednesday’s way, as a probing Jacques Maghoma run released Nuhiu, who forced a good save from Lonergan.

Wednesday continued to threaten, having so much more of the ball in threatening areas than their opponents.  On 73′, after the ball was won back by Mattock on the left, Stevie May was allowed to cut in from the inside channel and flashed a powerful drive just past the near post.

Wednesday continued to create chances as the game reached the 80th minute, this time Giles Coke curled an effort past the post after the initial Atdhe Nuhiu effort was blocked.

Yet more chances were to follow for Wednesday; good work from Nuhiu and Palmer down the right saw the Worksop-born full back advance to the byline, his cut-back found May whose sliced effort couldn’t be met by the onrushing Maghoma. Shortly after Royston Drenthe channelled the spirit of Jermaine Johnson as his wonderful square run was followed by a finish that was 10 yards wide.
