Wednesday continued their solid start to pre-season with another comfortable victory over lower league opposition, this time beating Bury 3-1 at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford.

Wednesday fielded a strong XI, with Glenn Loovens coming into defence for the first time in his new spell, while Keiren Westwood made his first start in between the sticks.

Stuart Gray’s men started brightly in the evening sun and took the lead immediately through Jacques Maghoma, after a superb little run and pass from Caolan Lavery.

Further chances followed as Kieran Lee fashioned an opening, before Antonio shot several miles wide after a trademark mazy run.

Wednesday were playing good football, with each of our younger players standing out, as Palmer and Lee continued their good passing interchanges from the second half of last season.

Bury did equalise against the run of play, with Daniel Nardiello converting Jim McNulty’s cross to make it 1-1 before half-time. Kieren Westwood was to be called upon before half-time, making a good save from Nardiello’s effort from distance.

Wednesday were to shuffle the pack frequently during the second period, as Hutchinson, Loovens and Westwood made way for Mattock, Zayatte and Wildsmith at the break.

Wednesday continued to create chances during the second period, the lively Lavery managing to force a cross back for Nuhiu who saw his shot blocked. Gary Madine was the latest to be introduced, with Lavery making way.

The Owls then regained the lead with Atdhe Nuhiu turning an Antonio cross goalwards with his head to register his first headed goal for Wednesday.

As the pace began to slacken, and further subs were made, with Coke, Corry, Maguire and McCabe all gaining valuable game-time, Wednesday were able to further stretch the advantage through Giles Coke who made it 3-1 with ten minutes left.

Another comfortable pre-season warm up then. Wednesday will now fly out for a pre-season tour of Slovenia, with a fixture against Belgrade based FK Čukarički on Wednesday.

In the immediate post-match interview, Stuart Gray told the assembled media that two new players are to link up with the squad in Slovenia. Keep checking back with Owls Alive for regular updates!

Next week’s return to South Yorkshire will see local affairs against Doncaster and Barnsley, before we entertain Newcastle United at S6.
